To Be An American

How to reclaim our nation’s promise amidst chaos and uncertainty.

This Fourth of July, it’s understandable that many of us don’t feel like celebrating.

After all, Independence Day is meant to honor American freedom from tyranny, and the values of liberty, equality, and self-governance that this nation was founded upon. But under the current regime, those ideals are now under attack.

In just six months, Trump and his corrupt administration – backed by a complicit Republican Party – have dismantled democratic safeguards, rolled back rights, gutted public institutions, and enforced inhumane immigration policies. And they show no signs of slowing down.

Most recently, the passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill” – pushed through by blatant political manipulation – helps billionaires get richer while stripping essential services from everyday Americans, especially the most vulnerable.

Fascism isn’t on the horizon – it’s here.

And somehow, I still know of people who support Trump and the Republican Party. Others have completely checked out. And far too many insist that what’s happening “isn’t that bad.”

Folks, our democracy is dying.

I’m so ashamed to be an American right now – and I know I’m not alone. The lack of empathy, compassion, and basic human decency we’re witnessing on a daily basis isn’t just heartbreaking – it’s a betrayal of everything this country is supposed to stand for.

But we shouldn’t be ashamed of America itself.

Because America isn’t a man, or a party, or a flag. It’s how We The People choose to define it. It’s an idea. A great experiment. A promise – one we’ve never fully lived up to, but one worth fighting for.

So this Fourth of July, join me – not in celebration, but in action. Any action that helps stop the normalization of Trumpism and change the current trajectory of our country.

If there’s anything left to honor this Independence Day, it’s the fight ahead – and those who refuse to stand by and let our 250-year-old democracy fall. We will meet this challenge – not with fireworks or flags – but with courage, clarity, and conviction.

That, to me, is what it truly means to be an American.
